ACT Score Calculator — Raw to 1–36, Classic & Enhanced 2025+

Who this is for: For students caught in the 2025-26 format transition — and for anyone scoring an ACT practice test who refuses to miscount an English raw score ever again.

Raw answers to 1–36 per section and composite — Classic ACT and the Enhanced 2025+ format, both built in.

Quick answer: ACT sections scale to 1–36 and the composite is their average — Classic: EN 75 / MA 60 / RE 40 / SC 40 raw; Enhanced 2025+: EN 50 / MA 45 / RE 36, Science optional and excluded from the composite. 75/75 English → 36, 60/60 Math → 36. Enter raw counts below.

Classic ACT: the composite averages all four sections. Scoring an Enhanced-format practice test against Classic tables (or the reverse) is the most common scoring mistake in 2025-26.
Representative table — each test date's equated conversion shifts a raw point or two.

How does this ACT score calculator work?

The ACT scales each section's raw score (number correct) to 1–36, then averages sections into the composite. Which table applies depends on the test you took: the Classic ACT runs English 75, Math 60, Reading 40, Science 40 questions, and the composite averages all four. The Enhanced ACT (national format from September 2025) shortens to English 50, Math 45, Reading 36, makes Science optional — and computes the composite from English, Math and Reading only, reporting Science separately. Enter your raw counts in either mode and the calculator applies a representative official-style table: 75/75 English → 36, 70 → 33, 60 → 30; 60/60 Math → 36, 47 → 30; a 34-30-32-30 section line composites to 32. Like the SAT, each test date gets its own equated table, so treat single-point outputs as representative and ranges as honest.

Common uses

  • Scoring Classic-format practice tests (ACT.org's older free guides)
  • Scoring Enhanced 2025+ practice material correctly
  • Checking whether the optional Science section changes your composite (it doesn't)
  • Converting an ACT practice run to its SAT equivalent for comparison

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my ACT composite score?
Scale each section's raw score to 1–36 with that test's conversion table, then average the section scores and round to the nearest whole number. On the Enhanced ACT (September 2025+), the composite averages English, Math and Reading only — Science is reported separately and doesn't drag the composite down.
What changed in the Enhanced ACT in 2025?
Three things: sections got shorter (English 50 questions vs 75, Math 45 vs 60, Reading 36 vs 40), Science became optional, and the composite formula changed to exclude Science. The Enhanced format rolled into national test centers from September 2025 — if you registered for a 2025-26 date, check which format your center runs before scoring practice material.
Is the Science section still scored?
On the Enhanced ACT, Science is optional and reported as its own 1–36 score plus a STEM score, but it no longer enters the composite. On the Classic ACT it was a full fifth of the composite. Students strong in Science lose nothing; students weak in it can now simply skip it.
Is a 30 on the ACT equivalent to 1360 on the SAT?
Yes — the official 2018 concordance maps ACT 30 to SAT 1360–1380. Other anchors: ACT 36 ↔ 1570–1600, ACT 28 ↔ 1300–1320, ACT 24 ↔ 1160–1190. The converter on this site does the full table both directions.
Do colleges prefer SAT or ACT scores?
They don't — admissions offices state plainly that both are viewed equivalently, which is what the concordance tables exist for. Choose by format: the ACT paces faster with more questions per minute and (on the Enhanced format) lets you skip Science; the SAT gives more time per question and runs adaptive modules.
Is there a penalty for wrong answers on the ACT?
No. Like the SAT, the ACT scores only correct answers — answer every question, even on sections you plan to skip on test day.
